Poynter Online has a good article about the occasions when journalists write eyewitness reports about events, and the power these can have. He cites recent coverage of the tsunami in asia by AP writer Gemunu Amarasinghe whose full report can be seen here

December’s edition of The Digital Journalist has some interesting first-hand accounts from Iraq… Two on the battle for Fallujah by Shawn Baldwin of The New York Times and Luis Sinco of The Los Angeles Times, and a fascinating insight into what it feels like to be kidnapped in Iraq by Paul Taggart of World Picture News.

Also in the issue is an overview of the latest movings and shakings at Reuters, by former Associated Press Senior Photo Editor Horst Faas.

Canon have posted new firmware (version 1.1.0) for the EOS-1D MkII. Stated improvements are:
1. Improvement to the AF tracking when using the AI Servo AF to shoot low-luminance or low-contrast subjects.
2. Reduced the time between when the camera is turned on and when it is ready to shoot from 0.5 seconds to 0.3 seconds.
3. Support added for the wireless file transmitter WFT-E1.
Rob Galbraith has a very detailed article explaining some of the quirks of AF in the Mark II with regard to different lenses, and comments on this firmware upgrade.
You can get the firmware here

It’s time for a belated plug for the newly-created weblog of my good friend, excellent photographer, and all-round technology guru Dan Chung. His blog is along somewhat similar lines to this one - i.e. technology news of interest to press photographers. Anyone who has met Dan will know he is quite an expert in this field and always armed with a bewildering array of the latest gear, so I look forward to reading his opinions.
Of note so far are posts on an interesting and cheap USB2-to-IDE converter, comments on the Epson R-D1, and a nice photo-gallery of his time spent covering the U.S. presidential elections.
Dan is a staff photographer for The Guardian and you can see some of his pictures both in photo-galleries on his weblog, and his page at the British Press Photographers Association (BPPA).
